Do not follow the trend

Your home should reflect you not just the latest trends. I’ve been meaning to share my thoughts on this for a while and today feels like the perfect time to dive into why I don't follow trends in Interior Design and how doing the same can help you create a home that feels truly yours and reflects your personality. With the new year upon us, it feels like the ideal way to kick off 2025.

Let’s be real: Trends come and go. They’re fun to follow and yes, they can make a space look “cool” for a moment. But here’s the thing when your home is built entirely around what’s trending, it often ends up looking more like a Pinterest board/ Instagram Post than a reflection of who you are. Sure, it’s pretty, but does it tell your story?

Instead, I focus on timeless design. Now, that doesn’t mean your home has to feel outdated or boring. It's about creating spaces that feel authentic to you—spaces that reflect your personality, values and lifestyle rather than just what’s popular right now.

Take my own home, for an example:

  • The art on my walls is painted by a local artist whose work resonates with me.

  • My living room shelf is filled with memory from my travel diary.

  • My coffee table is a unique piece inspired by my love for nature and earthy tones.

Every detail is personal, meaningful and timeless because it’s rooted in me not the latest Instagram trend.

How to Avoid the Trend Trap

If you’re like me and want your home to feel uniquely yours. Here are a few ways to steer clear of the trend cycle:

1. Function First

Your home should work for you. Trends often prioritize aesthetics over practicality, but your space needs to align with how you actually live.

2. Invest in Quality

Choose pieces that are well-made and age gracefully. A bespoke cabinet or a durable sofa might cost more upfront, but they’ll last for years and never go out of style.

3. Make It Personal

Incorporate items that speak to you—art, furniture, or decor with a story or emotional value. These personal touches are what make a house feel like a home.

4. Think Long-Term

Ask yourself: “Will I still love this in five years?” If you can’t picture it, it might be time to rethink that trendy piece.

What Is Timeless Design?

Timeless design isn’t about being boring or playing it safe it’s about creating a space that grows with you, reflects who you are and feels just as amazing years from now as it does today.

For example: I remember when the industrial look exposed brick and metal accents was all the rage. One of my clients initially wanted that style but after we talked, she realized it didn’t resonate with her at all. She loved warmth, color and soft textures things the industrial trend couldn’t provide.

So, we focused on what truly made her happy and comfortable. The result? A home filled with color, warmth and personality something entirely hers. That’s the magic of stepping outside the trend cycle.

Tips for Timeless Design

If you’re ready to break free from trends and design a home that’s true to you, here are some actionable tips:

1. Know Your Style

Take time to discover what you truly love colors, materials, textures and patterns. Create a mood board based on what resonates with you, not what’s trending.

2. Invest in Essentials

Focus on high-quality, timeless pieces—like a solid dining table or a versatile sofa—that form the foundation of your home.

3. Mix Old and New

Incorporate vintage finds or family heirlooms with character and history. These pieces add depth and individuality that trends can’t replicate.

4. Make It Personal

Fill your home with items that tell your story travel souvenirs, books and meaningful art. These are the details that make a space feel alive and uniquely yours.

5. Trust Your Gut

If something speaks to you go for it even if it’s not in right now. Your home should bring you joy not just look good for others.

Design a Home That’s True to You

Your home is your sanctuary a place where you can be yourself, live, grow and evolve. It’s not about chasing trends: it’s about curating a space that reflects your soul and tells your story.

So, if you’ve been feeling pressure to follow the latest design trends, I hope this encourages you to pause and reflect. Design with intention and create a home that feels like you.

Happy New Year 2025 and until next time, keep building a life and home you love 🤎
